Reflection Paragraph on Findings

During my research I learned things that I did not know about my future career. Secondary school teachers have a big role in preparing student for college. It is important that teachers keep up with their standards to insure they prepare and teach students well. I did not realize how important it was until having to do this research project. I also learned a lot about the classes that I will have to take on my journey in becoming a secondary school teacher. . Most of the classes will be a review of what I took in high school except in depth so I am able to teach. The benefits for a secondary school teacher are great! They receive health insurance and time off when students do. I was happy to find out that they expect many teachers to retire in 2008-2018, so hopefully finding a job is easy once I have my career. One thing I was really looking forward while doing my research was finding out how can I better my career and become a better teacher and more job material. I did find some valuable information but  I am sure later in college I will receive more answers. I am very excited about going to college to become a teacher and my research helped me better understand what I will be working with in the near future.

Question #8

One can fund their college in different ways. Most students apply for financial aid. This is provided by federal, state, local or private sources. In order to qualify it is based on financial need, enrollment status, academic progress, and attendance. There are also plenty of scholarships available for education majors.  Scholarships are what most people apply for and hope to receive. Loans are the last thing students should get to pay for college. Many people end up paying back loans in their late 40's. Their is one kind of loan that teacher can receive and not have to pay back. There are restrictions that apply to this like, you must teach in a public school for at least 5 years. If you receive  the loan and decide to change your major or decide to not teach in a public school for 5 years you do have to pay back what you received. There are many ways to pay for college and many resources to help, you but it is always smartest to apply for as much scholarships that a person can qualify for.

Question #7

Being a teacher has their good benefits. Most teachers work for 9 months and have their 3 months off including holidays through the 9 months received as well. Some teachers work year round for 45 days followed by a 15 day break and repeat again. Teachers also qualify for health insurance. In some states you also can receive dental and vision insurance. One of their best benefits is retirement and life insurance.

Employment in the public schools will vary depending on state and government budgets. If the state is not to well off on their budget they may layoff employees and teachers. There is however certain subjects that are in demand for fillings. Some of these subjects include "math, science (especially chemistry and physics), English as a second language, and special education and as a result, teachers with education or certifications to teach these specialties should have better job prospects()".

In May 2010 the median annual wage of a secondary school teacher was $53,230. Secondary school teacher generally work 39 hours a week or more. This includes work school hours, staying after school to grade papers and preparing lessons and even meeting with parents before and after school. They pay may also increase depending on additional qualifications and experience. Some secondary school teachers may even be coaches of a sport in school or advise clubs which is not part of their main job but takes away of their regular job duties and puts more pressure on the teacher. Most secondary teachers generally work the 10-month year period but in some places some teachers may work year round. This may be because they work in summer programs or because they work at a year long school. When teacher work at a year long school they "typically work 8 weeks in a row, are on break for 1 week and have a 5-week midwinter break ()."

As a teacher, working conditions can be quit ideal, as well as convenience. Being a teacher is a very stressful job. Not only are you teaching them about their subject but you are also teaching them life lessons, respect, and leadership skills for the future. Teachers are expected to have a high level job related interaction with their students. On a daily basis teachers speak in front of the class and teach to their students, as well as keeping updated with their parents on child's behavior or grades if necessary. Physical conditions for teacher are mainly indoors and close to another teachers kind of like a neighbor. The work performance for a teacher can be stressful especially when it comes to grading. It  is important to be very accurate with grades a simple error can give the student the wrong grade. Teachers have standard to meet and it's important they meet all deadlines. While teaching you may have to make decisions that might effect some student. The thing about being a teacher is you can be supervisor of clubs or coach for a sport. Some teacher may work over time by being part of an extra  curriculum.

Question #2

Preparing to become a secondary is a process that has many steps. To become a secondary one must first get a bachelors degree in elementary education. This covers grades 4th grade to 12th grade. Before one can receive their bachelors degree one must do an internship in a local school as a student teacher. This will allow one to get experience as a teacher and a taste of what being a teacher consist of. As a student teacher one becomes the teacher of a given class with the guidance of the actual teacher. After receiving your bachelors degree in elementary education one must get a state-issued certification or license if they want to become a public school teacher. Besides the degrees and licenses one must earn to prepare to be a secondary teacher there are other things that one must prepare for to become a secondary teacher. Question #1

Just like any other job being a teacher requires certain skills. As a secondary teacher one deals with many issues in the classroom from behavior issues, learning issues, and motivational issues. Secondary school teacher carry a great responsibility being that right after these years of school students go off into the real world. "Many successful people credit secondary school teachers with helping guide them into college, careers, and other endeavors"(Ferguson ).To be a secondary teacher one first and for-most must enjoy working with people and have patience. In schools there is a diversity of students all with different behaviors and issues. The only way to be able to deal with them would be with patience. As a teacher one must also be a great communicator to be able to communicate to the parents as well as the students about their strengths and weaknesses to become a better student and to succeed in school. Organization is also a much needed skill to be a good teacher. Organization is needed because without organization a teacher would not be able to properly guide students into the next level of education. Also keeping up with student's work progress is needed to help the students progress academically. "Successful teachers convey instructions and information in a manner their students can understand while modeling effective writing and speaking skills for their students" (School of Education). With being organized comes being efficient. A teacher must be efficient in order keep up with school curriculum and, with a timely manner, teach to the students what is required and do it well. Inspiration and ability to control students is also an important skill needed to be a teacher. As a teacher one must be able to inspire students to challenge and aim to succeed to make teaching a much easier, fun, and motivating process for both the student and the teacher. No one wants to be that boring and strict teacher that everyone hates. This goes along with being able to control the students. If a teacher becomes the one person that inspires the student it will be much easier to control a student as far as their behavior and their interest in their school work. Lastly, a teacher must know her material well to teach it well. Students do not hate nothing more than a teacher who does not know her material well. For those students that listen in class and do homework it becomes a drag to them going to class to a teacher who does not know their material well and cannot answer their questions. Overall, being a teacher requires a lot of skills but if this is the career for you it should come naturally.

What I Want to Know About my Topic

As I begin my search, I have many questions, and I'm sure more will develop as I research. The more I research about secondary teaching the less questions I have. My overarching essential question is "What do I know about secondary teaching?" To find answers to this broad inquiry, I will look for answers to more specific questions, such as:

1. What skills do you need to be a teacher?
2. What would you need to do to prepare for this career?
3. What are teachers working conditions like including their schedule?
4. What are the salary wages for a High School Teacher across the east coast?
5. What is the employment outlook like in the east coast for this field?
6. What kind of certifications can you receive after your teaching license to further your career?
7. What college courses will I need to have in order to receive my degree?
8. How can a person fund their teaching degree?

The Story Behind My Topic Choice

The career I am interested in pursing is becoming a high school teacher. I plan on teaching Spanish as a secondary language to students. This career is interesting to me because I enjoy helping people. I can also help English language learners. Plus, I want to have that feeling of making a difference. What better way of helping people out than by teaching them a second language that could benefit them in their future.
